Chaldean and Pythagorean numerology assign different values to the same letters, so one business name produces two totals. The Chaldean table runs 1 to 8, gives no letter the value 9, and puts H at 5. The Pythagorean table runs A=1 through I=9 and then repeats, putting H at 8. The two agree on ten letters only. What actually differs between the two systems?
Three things differ: the letter values, the reduction rules and the summation style. The first is the headline — the tables agree on ten letters and disagree on the other sixteen, eight of them worth more in Chaldean and eight more in Pythagorean.
The reduction rules
In the Chaldean practice recorded here a name total reduces to 1–9 and no master number survives: 11 becomes 2, 22 becomes 4, 33 becomes 6. The Pythagorean sources disagree among themselves — some keep 11, 22 and 33 unreduced, one keeps 44 too, one declines to reduce 10 at all, and that last source states plainly that 33 is not a master number, against three others that treat it as one.
The summation style
One style adds every letter across the whole name and reduces once; the other reduces each word to a digit first, then adds those. The final digit is identical either way — arithmetic, not doctrine. The two-digit compound is not, and this tradition holds that the compound carries the hidden influence while the digit shows only what the business appears to be.

The written sources teach it with a chant — "AJS, AJS; BKT, BKT" — and write each letter twice, as position over reduced value: J is 10/1, L is 12/3, Z is 26/8. One source dates the setting of numbers to the English alphabet to around 1903, while this tradition's own origin story has the Chaldean values revived and mapped onto the same 26 letters in the nineteenth century. "Older" is a claim about the ancestry of the values, not about the English tables.
Why does no letter carry 9 in the Chaldean table?
The reason recorded is theological, not mathematical: those who built the table are said to have held 9 as divine — standing for a nine-lettered name of God — and ascribed no single letter to it. A second phrasing makes the point arithmetically, that adding 9 leaves a number's reduced value where it was. Two consequences follow, both practical.
A name total may still be 9. The gap sits only in the alphabet. When letters add to 9 it is read with the ordinary 9 meaning and with the 9-series compounds — 18, 27, 36.
The Chaldean alphabet is a lighter table. All twenty-six values sum to 103 against Pythagorean's 126, so Pythagorean totals run higher. That matters because the classical compound table this tradition inherits stops at 52, and longer Pythagorean readings pass that ceiling more often. The sources split on what lies beyond, and not evenly: one drops compound meanings past 52 and reads the two digits added instead, while at least six others assign confident meanings above it — 55, 59, 68, 81 and 86 are all used on real names. The majority treats the ceiling as one book's stopping point rather than a rule of the method.
Is H worth 5 or 8, and why does it matter?
In this tradition H is 5, with F and P alone on 8. Every source that states a value for H states 5. Chaldean tables published elsewhere put H at 8; that variant appears nowhere in this material and is not used here. Two further recorded points make H worth watching on its own:
- H is called this tradition's money letter, and the number of times it occurs is read separately from the total. The same source attaches a caution: repeated H is said to bring money and lower-back trouble together.
- Doubling a letter is the standard way of moving a total, and doubling H is one recorded move — a correction that shifts a name from 81 to 86, which works only because H is 5.
In the Pythagorean table H sits at 8 beside Q and Z, so a name built around H reads five-flavoured in one system and eight-flavoured in the other — and 8 belongs to the 2/4/8 set that most of these sources tell you to keep a business name away from.
How does one business name work out under both tables?
Take a registered name of Arham Spices Private Limited. The government-conferred suffix comes off first — the test being whether the government gave it to you or you wrote it yourself — so only ARHAM SPICES is valued.

The thirteen-point gap comes from five letters: R gains 7, I gains 8 and H gains 3, a total of plus 18; P loses 1 and each of the two S's loses 2, a total of minus 5.
So the same eleven letters read as 36/9 in one system and 49/4 in the other, and neither compound is a clean pass. The business sources refuse 49 outright and treat 36 as a roadblock, because 3 and 6 sit inside one number and are read here as opposed — though the older book tradition reads 36 favourably, a conflict recorded rather than resolved. At the digit, 4 as a business name number sits in the 2/4/8 set most of these sources avoid, while 9 as a business name number is contested — the best of all for business to one, unpredictable to another. Reducing word by word first shifts the compounds but not the digits: Chaldean 4 + 5 = 9, Pythagorean 5 + 8 = 13.
What the suffix does, which is more than the table does
A minority position counts the suffix in. Do that and the Chaldean words become 13 + 23 + 27 + 22 = 85, reducing through 13 to 4; the Pythagorean become 23 + 26 + 37 + 36 = 122, reducing to 5. Two words the owner did not choose moved the Chaldean verdict from 9 to 4 and the Pythagorean from 4 to 5, in opposite directions. - The compounds are 42 and 69. The reading of 42 is openly conflicted — among the good six-forms for two practitioners, ruinous in one recorded case for a third. 69 has no reading anywhere in this material: the classical table stopped at 52, and the compounds practitioners carried past it do not include 69, so the compound-number tables are silent there.
- Applying the minority above-52 rule — add the two digits — gives 15, described as fortunate for obtaining money, gifts and favours from others; on that reading the Pythagorean route reaches 6 through a compound the sources like and the Chaldean through one they argue about. On the majority reading, 69 is simply unlit.
- The vowel split, used with both tables, diverges too: the vowels of RISHI TEXTILES total 13 in Chaldean and 37 in Pythagorean. Compound 13 is a caution number; 37 is the tradition's named partnership compound, a meaning it shares with 46.
Which system does this tradition treat as the default, and why?
Chaldean, for business and personal names alike. Multiple practitioner sources name it explicitly against one using Pythagorean, and one claims around 90% of working numerologists follow it. The reasons offered are that its values came from sound rather than alphabet order, and that it is older. Among the written sources the balance reverses — one Chaldean book against several Pythagorean ones — so the split is practitioner-versus-book rather than East-versus-West. The Pythagorean side has its own rationale: letters are symbols for sound, sound vibrates, and a letter's numbered place in the alphabet is its rate of vibration.
The disagreement is not polite. One source calls the Pythagorean system a failure for using nine values. Another computes both and reports resonance only from the Chaldean side. A third insists on running both tables and will not rank them. They split on number families too: the Pythagorean side reads 3, 6 and 9 as one family, while one Chaldean position holds 3 and 6 are not friends.
What do you do when a name scores well in one system and badly in the other?
Plainly: no source states a tie-break. The one source insisting on running both tables will not put either above the other, and this material's own list of gaps names the missing rule outright. What it offers instead is a way to stop the question mattering.
- Weight the system you are practising in. In a Chaldean frame the Chaldean total is the working number; the Pythagorean is a second opinion, not a veto.
- Check the string before the table. Which words you include, and whether the brand or the registered name governs, move totals further than the table does.
- Read the compound, not just the digit. A 9 arriving from 36 is not read here as a 9 arriving from 18.
- Remember how little the total carries. One source puts it at roughly 20% of a good name — placement, first and last letters, the combinations and the sound are the rest. Another puts 50% on the first letter.
- Change as little as possible, and not on your own. The recorded craft rule is to move to the nearest acceptable compound rather than the most glamorous one, and the material is blunt about letters added after half-watching an explanation, saying the impact is badly wrong.

It does not tell you which system is true. The material holds both, holds practitioners who dismiss each other's methods, and holds no test that would settle it. Nor does it say what to do when the verdicts conflict, because no source states a rule — anything offered as a tie-break would be invention. Where the sources genuinely disagree, this article has said so rather than picking a winner: 36 is favourable in the book tradition and a roadblock in the business one; 42 is good to two practitioners and ruinous to a third; the ceiling at 52 is absolute to one source and a formality to six.
